planes have been buzzing us constantly

back and forth. back and forth. i feel like i am in a war zone...and in a sense, i am. in the heavily forested zone in the war against wild fires. our arsonel? hydromulch.
while six smaller fixed-wing aircraft ferry load after load of a thick green substance known as “hydromulch” from the airport, at rancho san fernando the huge erickson air-crane known as a “heavy lift” sucks up from 1,800-2,000 gallons of it, lifts off, and within minutes is back on the ground ready for the next load. - santa barbara independent

oh great

about 80% of ca's wildfire fighting budget spent.
37-million dollars remain in the state budget for battling wildfires, with the typically most active month for blazes still ahead.

...if this year’s firefighting expenses go over the top...then the state will begin dipping into it’s 500-million dollar reserve.

that’s the so-called “rainy day” fund - cpr radio

someone else is on fire this time

ahhh...it's only texas.

oh...and the republican governor who lambasts "liberal" spending from the federal government. well, seems he wants government help and moolah to help fight the fires in the 167 counties he has declared disaster areas.

since june 25, wildfires have scorched around 10,000 acres and threatened around 150 homes.

brown said the fires are becoming too large for local fire departments to handle without help from the forest service. tuesday was particularly bad for grass fires in palo pinto county, where a fire burned near the mineral wells airport. in jack county, 600 acres were destroyed, he said. - forth worth star-telegram

we're not on fire out here on the left coast

but the right coast isn't so lucky. our hearts go out to them. we feel their crispy pain.

fueled by waxy undergrowth and unpredictable winds, wildfires across a large swath of inland horry county destroyed dozens of homes and displaced thousands of residents thursday, leaving a smoky scar across the sky, scorch marks across the land and fears of more destruction to come.

the fires could burn for days, officials said, but conditions for fighting them were expected to improve thursday night. those same conditions - low wind and high humidity - will make for a friday filled with dense smoke and fog, officials warned. - the news & observer

and we're really not out of the "woods" yet in terms of being safe...we're entering our high fire season a little early and we don't have much water to deal with the parched "wild fire food" that our state offers up.
california is bracing for another year of bad wildfires as a thin mountain snowpack, parched vegetation and an early heat wave signal a third consecutive year of drought.

recent surveys by the state of california and the u.s. forest service found the sierra snowpack to be 80% of normal, and the moisture content in brush and grasses to be drier than usual by this time of year. - ustoady
